Can Vitamin C and Niacinamide be combined?

Can Vitamin C and Niacinamide be used together? Several websites read that vitamin C cannot be used at the same time as niacinamide (vitamin B3). But is that actually true? To know where this information comes from, we need to go back to the 60s, and a study from the early 1960s describes that vitamin C in combination with niacinamide enters a chemical reaction in which nicotinic acid (nicotinic acid) is formed. Nicotinic acid can cause redness and in addition, both ingredients would nulliate each other's effects. But more recent studies between 2008 and 2020 indicate the opposite. A combination of vitamin C and niacinamide does not cause skin problems and offers a range of skin enhancing benefits! Unfortunately, the 'old' research still referred to is often misinterpreted. The study used unstabilized forms of the vitamins, but nowadays in cosmetology only stabilized vitamins are used. In addition, nicotinic acid forms only after prolonged exposure to high temperatures, much higher than in normal use situations. Even putting the product in a box in the sun for days does not provide the necessary temperature. It is also good to know that this does not apply to widely used cosmetic vitamin C forms, such as magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbic acid or l-ascorbic acid. The conclusion: all studies that demonstrate a problem in combining vitamin C and niacinamide have been conducted in a manner that does not reflect what skincare products undergo during production, use or storage. And from a more logical point of view: Niacinamide has been scientifically proven to have a strong enhancing effect on the skin and vitamin C is naturally the most common antioxidant in our skin... If these two vitamins react poorly to each other, the application of niacinamide would on the skin itself should be problematic. Why combine? The more recent studies conclude that vitamin C and niacinamide are a powerhouse combination. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant and supports collagen production, while niacinamide is a strong skin repairing ingredient to refine coarse pores, smooth fine lines and refresh dull skin. It is a combination suitable for all skin types, with complexion becoming more radiant, smoother and youthful.
